Environmental Management System - EMS

The formalisation of a company's organisation in order to control its impact on the environment is based on a recognised model in the ISO 14001 standard.

Deming Wheel

In addition to a prescriptive approach, continuous improvement in environmental performance requires very good knowledge on technical and regulatory levels of the environmental issues facing a company.

NORMATIVE FRAMEWORK

The following standards and reference systems can serve as a basis for formalising that organisation :

  • ISO 14001: Environmental Management System,
  • FD X 30 205: Environmental management systems - Guidelines for implementing a phased environmental management system

The choice of reference system depends on the context and the expectations of the company.

METHODOLOGICAL APPROACH

Setting up the Environmental Management System is based on the following steps.

In addition to the diagram for setting up an EMS, the following comments provide further explanation about the approach of the CNPP :

ORGANISATIONAL AND MANAGERIAL DIAGNOSTIC OF THE ENVIRONMENT

The objective in this phase is to analyse and assess the practices and current environmental organisation in relation to the requirements of the chosen reference system.

ENVIRONMENTAL ANALYSIS

Since 1996, the CNPP has developed the SMPG* method for conducting an environmental analysis in order to identify and assess the environmental issues and impacts of the organisation.

REGULATORY COMPLIANCE AUDIT AND INTELLIGENCE

The "regulatory compliance audit" and "regulatory intelligence" product files describe the methods used by the CNPP.

EMS DEPLOYMENT SUPPORT – ON-SITE SUPPORT

As part of its support service, the CNPP undertakes to perform the following :

  • Provide methodological assistance in introducing the reference system,
  • Ensure compliance with the work schedule, both in terms of the work done and lead-times,
  • Assist the EMS Project Manager in drafting the requisite documentation,
  • Validate the consistency of the documentary system with the specific procedures.

The CNPP can also take charge of preparing or adapting the relevant internal documents.

ADDED VALUE

The CNPP has developed tools and methods in order to facilitate the support it provides to the company, including skills transfer :

  • the SMPG method to carry out the environmental analysis,
  • structured tools for the regulatory compliance assessment,
  • Sécuribase, an on-line regulation database for regulatory intelligence purposes.

CNPP consultants provide environmental, technical and regulation management training as well as specific training courses on environmental management.
