Presentation

The film illustrates the characteristics and use of the most commonly used combustible metals in industry:  Aluminium, Magnesium, Calcium, Strontium, Lithium, Sodium, Potassium, Hafnium, Zirconium and Silicon.
These metals have several common characteristics:
  • a high affinity for oxygen;
  • rapid combustion in air when they are finely divided;
  • high temperature during combustion;
  • reducing power of water releasing hydrogen that can cause an explosion;
  • difficulty of extinguishing fires.

Through demonstrations, trainees understand the extreme reactivity of these metals when in contact with water.  An overview of the principles and methods of extinguishing fires is presented

Water test on the fire: magnesium - calcium - strontium - sodium
