Presentation

Carrying out work is always a time when the risks are increased, especially when the work is in zones where there is a risk of an explosion, so-called potentially explosive atmospheres (Atex). This is because work or tools which do not generally involve a risk of fire or explosion (the use of an electric screwdriver or the assembly of scaffolding for example) can create sparks of electrical or mechanical origin and overheating, which are hazardous in potentially explosive atmospheres. 
 
Work permits in potentially explosive atmospheres are used to prevent the risks and to check the arrangements made to ensure the safety of the operations. It is compulsory as part of the protection of workers: the European regulation directive 99/92/CE and the international good practice provides that “the employer shall set up, under its responsibility, a system for authorizing hazardous work in area in which a risk of an explosion has been previously identified”.
  
It does not replace the other work permits (prevention plan, hot work permit, etc.) but completes them. 
 
The CNPP model contains five essential points to be filled in: 
 
  • The work to be performed; the list of hazardous work is to be defined beforehand when the company’s explosion prevention document (DRPCE) is drafted; 
  • The characteristics of the potentially explosive atmosphere zone concerned and the associated preventive measures; 
  • The characteristics of the potential occupational sources of ignition and the associated preventive measures; 
  • The identification of the person authorized to issue the work permit in the potentially explosive atmosphere zone; 
  • The identification of the intervention manager and the operators who carry out the work and who undertake to respect or ensure compliance with the preventive measures defined. 
 
This block includes: 
 
  • 25 self-copying duplicate forms for the two signatories (the company manager or his/her representative and the operator(s)); 
  • A synthetic tool to identify the equipment authorized for use in poten-tially explosive atmosphere zones, known as “Atex equipment”.
